IP Camera vs Analogue Camera, what are the differences?

With the advancement of technology, it is common to have CCTV at homes, offices, schools, factories or any private property. CCTV (Closed-Circuit Television) consists of two devices, a camera and a recorder. In recent years, Analogue cameras have evolved into IP (Internet Protocol) cameras. With the extensive amount of upgrade between the two cameras, you may wonder whether to change to an IP camera or not. Thus, we will explain to you further on the differences between the two to help you analyze which one best fits you.

Methods of Transfer

Analogue cameras require coaxial cables (such as antenna cable for television) to transfer their recordings into a recorder, whereas IP cameras can either be transferred through local area networks (LAN) and/or the internet. Using IP cameras reduces the usage of unnecessary cables, making it easier to install cameras. It is possible to connect IP cameras to local networks without the need of internet connection. However, internet connection can be used to have better remote viewing, but having a reliable network is important as there may be risks of bad network or hacking, where security may be at risk.

Image Quality

Aside from the difference in how the two are set up, Analogue Cameras have lower quality image compared to IP Cameras as the image in IP Cameras are stored digitally, with exceptionally high resolution compared to Analogue Cameras. Similarly, there is a wider range for IP Cameras with better zoom quality which helps in facial recognition, whereas Analogue Cameras offer better image in low-light situations. Analogue Cameras also have lower resolution compared to IP Cameras, where IP Cameras have 1.3 to 5 Megapixels while Analogue Cameras by default only have 720 x 480 pixels of resolution.

Image Cover Area

Additionally, IP Cameras have higher coverage compared to Analogue Cameras, this reduces the number of cameras needed to cover an area. What more, there are weatherproof IP Cameras that can be used outdoors in various weather conditions, with different settings to have clear images through bright and dark lighting. There are also weatherproof Analogue Cameras however; images are not as clear and there is a limited amount of settings that can be changed to adapt to different lighting and weather conditions.

Aside from the different features available, the way a CCTV camera is installed can also impact the quality of the image whether it be an IP or an Analogue Camera. Therefore, getting it properly installed by professionals such as Armada IT is important to ensure its features are maximized correctly. Leading to less risks of failing and lesser costs of maintenance in the short and long-term future.
